The Little Man In the Map
“A blank map of the U.S.A /
Plus your imagination /
Are all you need to learn the states /
All fifty in our nation.”
So begins this delightful book of rhyme that takes geography students, young and old, through all fifty states on a unique imaginative path, from the classroom, around the country, and back.
The reader's (or listener's) recall of state names and locations amazes everyone after the first reading. Read it a few more times, study the character map, and all fifty states are on the tip of your tongue.
Working with the author, MDD focused the manuscript — reducing the text by half (that’s another book) — designed the book and wall map, provided concepts and guidance for the development of the art program, produced the book, and oversaw the printing and manufacturing.

Winner of the Silver Moonbeam Award for non-fiction in children’s picture books (and many more awards since), “The Little Man in the Map is an impressive undertaking and one that reflects excellent pedagogy. The use of rhyme, the reinforcement through visual cues, the clear structural breaks, and the reliance on a ‘guide’ character all speak to effective teaching and learning.…rhymes and visuals are really clever…I found the regular reviews and locator maps quite useful for tracking progress.”
